The Shifting Power in 2000 - Commentary

Why We Don't Feel Powerfu
l

We have been told that knowledge is power.   You might say to yourself, then, if I'm so smart and have so much knowledge, why don't I feel powerful?

We have been told that if we just think positively, our lives will change into our desired reality.  Have you ever asked yourself why, then, with all the positive thinking, am I still in the same job, in the same dysfunctional relationships, having the same financial problems?

We have been told that we are moving into a new age in which peace and cooperation will replace war and competition. Do you ever ask yourself how this can be possible, when each of us still wages a mighty war within…and when we have learned to view the powerful as those who successfully compete in the world?

Today I'd like to share with you why, with all of our degrees and titles, positive thinking, and successful competitions, we don't feel powerful. We will look at power in a new way, and consider some new tools that can move us into a place of personal power.

To get to that place of power, we need to first realize where our true power lies.   It is not where we have been conditioned to look for it.  Our true power source is within - it is our connection with spirit.  We have simply forgotten.

Instead of relying on spirit for our power, we are conditioned at a young age to believe that we must do something to win, to be powerful.

Beliefs We Hold About Power

What are some other beliefs we hold about power? Sometimes there is the idea that it is weak to be spiritual. The idea here is that it is weak to pray and ask for guidance, that strength comes from doing it by yourself.

For most people, spirit is a nice concept, but it does not feel real.

But we need to make it real in our lives.  As the Council of 12 shared earlier, only by connecting with our true power source can we move forward with ease and grace.

Therefore, what is needed now is the permission to have a new view of power.

Think for a moment of what the word power means to you.  Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a powerful being. What does that being look like, feel like? Is it a man or a woman?  What is the being doing to be so powerful? Now, imagine for a moment a powerless being. What does that being look like, feel like? What is making him or her so powerless?

How Power is Traditionally Defined

Let's now go to our English dictionary, Websters, for a definition.  Power is defined as the ability to do or act. In political terms, the word is linked with political strength or control over others.  A powerful country, for example, is said to possess authority or influence.  Nations with a mighty military have been viewed as powerful.

In the world, people believe that to be powerful, we need to exert our will. People think we need to have control over situations.  That's what power means to them.

When we walk with spirit, and spirit is our power source, we are powerful even when we are silent and still. Sometimes this is when we are the most powerful!

Picture for a moment a magnet. What gives the magnet its power? The magnet is able to draw to itself like energies, just as we are able to do when we tap into our true power source.

Just like the magnet, when we move into power that is spirit-based, we magnetize opportunities allowing us to create a synchronistic flow and more joy in life. When we come from ego-based power, we magnetize situations involving competition and comparison.  When countries come from this perspective, we have wars.  If anyone wants an example, check CNN on any given day!

Let's think about what kind of things we want to magnetize!  Let's consider how we can redefine power for ourselves.

Some New Definitions of Power

Well, what are some of the possible new definitions of power and how will they impact us?  The first involves the synergy of power as many come together for a common purpose. Today we are seeing a shift in what we consider to be powerful milestones and important celebrations. There is now increasing awareness of the potency involved when thousands of people across the globe join in a unified focus.   It is the energetics of this that is important.

People are energetic beings and the power they have is energy in motion! Power is our fuel. Therefore, if we want to embrace more of our own power, it is useful to think of it as energy.

Everything is energy and everything is moving. Power and the things we manifest are a result of energy moving.  This means we are always manifesting. Even the homeless person on the street is manifesting!

Let's return, for a moment to the idea of expressing our power.  Each of us expresses our power in different ways. When we manifest in what we consider to be a positive direction, we often think of ourselves as powerful. The opposite is also true.  For example, we sometimes use our power to focus on getting even with someone who we felt hurt us.  People do this.  Countries do this.  It is indeed a negative way of expressing power.

But, we are evolving to new levels of awareness. As we do so, the kind of power we value is shifting.

Changing Concepts of Ourselves

This brings us to the second new definition of power, involving our concepts of ourselves.

You see, many of our concepts about ourselves are changing as we redefine what power means.  For example, a powerful body is much more than a trim shape with muscles. When we move into our true spiritual power, we connect with the energy of all of our chakra centers, for a body that is full of the energy and vitality.

Let's now consider some useful tools to discover how we lose our power and what to do about it.

What causes us to lose power?  The main culprit is fear--fear-based emotions and actions. Other factors are boredom and lack of enthusiasm.

Fear keeps us in illusion and in a reaction mode, causing us to resort to manipulation or control. It causes us to give away our power and to give others permission to have power over us.

Fear interrupts the flow, stopping us in our tracks. How do we respond to being interrupted?  One way is by control or manipulation.  We want to get back that feeling of being in control, even though it is an illusion, and very temporary at that.  If we feel that we aren't able to get back in control, we tend to get in even more fear.  It's a tug of war between fear and control, and either way, we lose.  In fact, the more we do this, the farther away we get from connecting with our spiritual power.

As an example, let's say you are in a relationship and you have a conflict.  The other person says something that seems like an attack.  Instead of connecting with spirit before responding, fear drives you into reaction mode.  You lash out at the other person, defending yourself. Desiring to be "in control," you feel you need to set the record straight, to make them understand the truth about you.

Ways We Give Away Our Power

Let's now look at three of the ways we learn to give away our power. The first is that we doubt ourselves.

Have you ever been sitting in a gathering such as this and doubted that you were "getting the point," judging yourself for not knowing something the speaker was talking about?

The second way is that we look to others to tell us that we're OK. Early in life, most of us learn to look outside of ourselves for answers and authority. We often think that the person sitting next to us has more knowledge than we do. At work, we often allow our boss to determine whether we feel OK about ourselves.

How To Maintain Your Connection With Spirit

To remain in our power involves a constant connection with spirit. Among the ways to maintain this connection:

1. Begin each day by inviting spirit to connect with your energy for the day ahead, affirming your dedication to serve as a vehicle for he highest good of all concerned.

2. Request that you are divinely guided throughout the day, asking for the ability to discern what you need to see from each situation so that you can progress as much as possible on your spiritual path.  Ask to be shown how to be in the right place at the right time, how to stay in the flow with spirit, for a journey marked by ease and grace.

3. Visualize a stream of violet light coming into your head and entire body, and imagine that this light is cleansing any misqualified energy or negativity within you or connected with your energy field.  Imagine that this violet light carries any negativity out of you and back into the light for transmutation. Next visualize a continuum of golden light energy -- which goes up and down the spinal cord, moving from three feet above your head, down through the entire body and into the Earth below. Ask that a field of golden energy be erected three feet around you in all directions, for protection throughout the day.

4. If you are feeling particularly stressed about a situation, or about going to work, bless the people involved and ask spirit to show an appropriate response to each person and situation.

5. Set up a sacred space, both at home and at the workplace. The amount of space doesn't matter.  It can be a small table, a ledge near a window.  It can be a candle on your desk, which you light each morning when you arrive at work.  Intent is the key here.  The symbolism of this space will give you increased connection to spirit, even at times when you aren't conscious of it.

6. Express gratitude each day for the blessings in your life. If you can't think of anything to be grateful for, ask spirit to help you make a list!  Gratitude sets energy in motion, unlocking more of your spiritual power.

All of these tools help to connect with and practice your spiritual power.

What about the times when even with all of these tools, we still get into fear instead of our power? First, take a moment to breathe.  Take a deep breath and invite in spirit.  You can do this anywhere -- at your desk at work, in the elevator, in the subway, at a restaurant, and right here.

Next, inwardly ask spirit to give you a higher perspective, a simplified view of things. It is we humans who try to make things complicated!  Ask spirit to help you move more into the moment with life. No matter what is happening around you, spirit can help you to find the quiet space within, that part of you that knows what is real.  As you connect with this quiet space, spirit will remind you that the external ego-based world is illusion. You might even get a sense of humor about what others view as disaster.

An example of this for me came when I was suddenly laid off from a job and had no other job to replace the income. I packed up my office, putting the boxes into my car.  When I got home, instead of getting fearful, I invited in The Council of 12 to show me the next steps.  They suggested that I contact a woman I had spoken with about work a month earlier.  She said it was amazing that I called just then, since her key person just suddenly went back to England and she really need someone.  Before I had even unpacked my car, she asked me to come in and begin work with her the very next day!

I laughed inside as I thanked spirit for orchestrating such a seamless move into more appropriate work. I had only one day off!

When our lives shift so abruptly, it's common to get into what I call gloom and doom thinking. If you find this happens to you, be patient with yourself. God is not here to punish us.  When you get into fear, ask spirit to help you refocus your energy so that you won't say or do anything you will regret later.

I thank you for being here with me here today. I hope to see each of you again soon.  In the meantime, know that the sparks of your true power source have been re-ignited today. Allow these sparks to help you become more of the divine magnet that you are!
