The Ishayas’ Ascension

What is the Ishayas’ Ascension?

The Ishayas’ Ascension is a collection of simple spiritual techniques for cultivating an attitude towards life of Appreciation (or Praise), Gratitude, Love and Compassion.

Each technique uses a short phrase designed to encourage these positive, or ascending, mind states. The phrases are tailored to each individual during a First Sphere course run by teachers of Ascension.

The teachings can be used just as an aid for handling stress.  Or they can be used as intended, to go much further, rising beyond self-limiting beliefs and using them as a powerful vehicle for spiritual growth.

The techniques are universal and can be used within any belief system, or even without a belief system. After all, no one has a monopoly on Appreciation, Gratitude, Love and Compassion.  When these attitudes become the basic approach to life, they quite literally transform our lives. They are the basic qualities of the enlightened mind within each of us.  The Ascension techniques allow this inner reality to emerge gracefully and fully.

The Ishaya tradition holds that the teachings come from the Himalayas, where the tradition of enlightenment has been honoured for millennia.  The story goes that the teachings have been preserved there until the world was ready for them – they have now been released and are being taught around the world by the Ishayas.

Who are the Ishayas?

In its broadest sense, the word Ishaya refers to any enlightened being, or indeed to anyone committed to their growth. More specifically, the Ishayas are an order of monks who are the custodians of this timeless teaching.

A North American teacher, Maharishi Sadashiva Isham (MSI), started teaching Ascension in the early 1990s. In 1992 he founded The Society For Ascension in North Carolina which became the base for the modern order of Ishaya monks (made up of men and women) and a teacher training facility that has trained hundreds of teachers to take the teaching out into the world.

Today there are two main organisations teaching Ascension, The Society for Ascension and The International Society of Ascenders, as well as a handful of smaller groups of individual teachers.  There are many thousands of people all over the world who have learnt the techniques and are benefiting from them in their daily lives.

THE FIRST SPHERE

The Ascension Techniques - or Attitudes - are grouped into seven spheres, each a rounded collection of related techniques.  The following description of the first four techniques, which make up the First Sphere, was provided by The Society For Ascension:

Praise

The Praise Ascension Attitude is the most basic, the most fundamental of all the techniques. The Praise Ascension Attitude heals our subjective experience of the universe. This is the root attitude of all the techniques taught by the Ishayas.  This technique can be used any time, day or night, with the eyes open or closed, to cause a calming and healing effect.  Practiced with the eyes closed, this technique produces deeper rest than sleep.  Because of this profound rest, deep-rooted stresses dissolve that are never touched by sleep.

Gratitude

The Gratitude Technique is subtler than the Praise Ascension Attitude. The Gratitude Attitude deals with another of the fundamental stresses that needs to be healed to experience life fully.  The Gratitude Attitude aligns our relationship to the objective world.  This is the first technique designed to heal our relationship with everything in the physical world, including our bodies.

Love

The Love Ascension Attitude heals another one of the fundamental misconceptions that keep us from experiencing who we truly are. The Love Attitude deals with our relationship to the Source, the Ascendant, the Absolute, the Infinite.  Many people find this the sweetest of the first three techniques.

Cognition

Cognition heals the fourth fundamental stress that keeps one from evolving to enlightenment. The Cognition technique deals with our relationship to all of humanity.  It is used in conjunction with the other three techniques because our relationship to humanity is connected to our relationship to the subjective, the objective and our relationship to the Source, the Ascendant.

If you are interested in exploring the techniques further, MSI’s spiritual novel First Thunder is based around the lessons and gifts of the First Sphere.  His book Ascension discusses the philosophy of Ascension in a more matter of fact style and contains descriptions of each attitude in the seven spheres.

Note that these books do not contain the techniques themselves which are passed on by word of mouth.  The First Sphere is normally taught in a weekend course format, during which participants tailor the techniques for their own use.

Participants are asked to keep the techniques confidential, so that everyone learns them from a qualified teacher. Partly this is because they are very simple and an intellectual understanding of the techniques on its own achieves nothing.  Learning to ascend in the focussed group environment of a First Sphere course increases the chances of a participant “getting” what the attitudes convey.

If you are interested in obtaining books or learning to ascend, contact any of the organisations or teachers appearing in this section.
